Replacing windows is something that many homeowners dread. However, avoiding to do so can cost far more than simply moving forward with the replacement. Besides the obvious troubles that include: reduced efficiency, increased utility bills and the potential for window failure, failing to replace a window when needed will cost you far more than expected. Here are some common warning signs that indicate it may be time to replace your windows:
- Emergence of Drafts –Many experts and contractors cite this as the most common indicator. A draft identifies that there is an increase of air infiltration that was not present previously. This is a tell-all sign that the window is failing to keep the appropriate amount of interior air in the home and the appropriate amount of external air out. A draft shows that the window seal is no longer functioning properly and this can create adverse results for your cooling or heating bill, as the system will have to work harder to compensate for infiltration. This situation only continues to progress and grow worse, further raising home heating or cooling bills annually, if left unaddressed.
- Warping –For wood window owners this is often the result of exposure to moisture or the elements. This is often associated with an increase of condensation or precipitation. In essence, the casing can contract or expand and directly affect the performance of the window. In all cases the windows are no longer functioning properly. A draft can now be created from a loosened grip or the window can be under constant stress from an influx in pressure due to contraction. The long-term effects can be troubling. In addition to this being an on-going problem that has no solution other than a replacement, poor seals can lead to the prospect of flooding in rain events, diminished durability and even window failure. Warping must be addressed by replacing the window as soon as possible.
- Difficulty Closing or Opening Windows –Some windows are difficult to open, but if this is a recent development it may also serve as a suitable indicator that is time to replace your windows. Essentially, this comes from a failure of balance. A failure of balance can pose potential hazards that can be quite costly and dangerous. It is important to note, that at this point, the window cannot stay open or closed properly. With this, comes the potential for trouble. Simply put, if it is difficult to close or open a window, it may be time to revamp that aperture.
- Increased Energy Bill – This is one of the tell-tale signs that your windows may need to be replaced. Windows that are beginning to fail or perform ineffectively often result in a raise in utility bills. This is because the window is no longer keeping foreign air out or retaining the conditioned interior air. If your energy bill has been increasing each month, it may be a sign that your windows are beginning to lose performance ability.
- Increased Condensation and Precipitation – This is a sign that water vapor or even rain or ice is able to infiltrate the seal. When these various forms of water enter the internal atmosphere they will condense from cooler interior air or perhaps puddle or liquefy by the seals of the window. A properly functioning window will not allow any form of foreign air into your home or office. Yet, if you see condensation on the window or some damp spots by the seal after a storm, this is a sign the window may be losing its ability to retain a boundary between the external elements and the premises. This problem will only intensify with time, it is best to address in the preliminary stages when the issue is first perceived.
